MORE BOMBING
LONDON AREA ATTACKED CASUALTIES AND DAMAGE WHISTLING BOMBS DROPPED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrignr.) LONDON, August 19 The air raids on London on Sunday reached proportions comparable with the attacks launched last week against coastal towns. Several armadas of German bombers and fighters, one totalling 200, were intercepted before reaching the London area. Two smaller thrusts got through and caused widespread superficial damage and a number of casualties, mostly slight. Bombs considerably damaged a number of houses.
A force of 42 enemy aeroplanes followed the Thames, in spite of tremendous anti-aircraft fire, and penetrated deep enough to give the Metropolis a second alarm for the day.
One hundred bombers were counted heading for London last evening, but Spitfires cut off the formation some distance away and only 53 of them, flying haphazardly, were counted returning over the coast. Bombs fell in the main shopping area of one district on the outskirts of London.
The midday raiders caused civilian casualties in the neighbourhood of Croydon. One report states that the raiders, in an endeavour to intimidate the people, dropped cardboard whistling bombs, which contained no explosive.
