NEW LAKE
KARAPIRO WORKS RESULT INTEREST OF ANGLERS (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Monday When the Karapiro hydro-electric works are completed a new extensive lake will be formed, as a result of the dam to be erected. Anglers are particularly interested, as was indicated at the meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society held in Cambridge on Saturday night. It was stated that the matter was one of national importance, as the lake would become popular for many purposes, in addition to angling. An interesting discussion arose when Mr M. E. Fitzgerald brought forward blue-prints of the proposed lake. The level of the lake was marked and also points where the water became 30 feet deep. Mr Fitzgerald stated that several alterations would be necessary to the roads, but this would not affect the access. In some places the roads would pass within a few feet of the lake. While the time might not have arrived for action, it was necessary to take preparatory steps to see that reserves were dedicated along both banks of the lake. Not only would the lake be required for anglers, but also by all sections of the public. Unlike Arapuni, the Karapiro lake was certain to become popular for camping, swimming, boating and other sports. The president, Mr F. E. McKenzie, stated that he understood most farmers with land running to the lake were prepared to give the land necessary for access, provided that stiles were erected over their fences. If that could be assured, it was probable that the Public Works Department would include the extra ground when making surveys. Mr Fitzgerald was thanked for his maps, which it was stated would be of great value to the society when further details were available.
