EXPORT KILLINGS
18 PER CENT INCREASE The improvement in the meat production position last season is indicated by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its export Figures for the period from October 1, 1939, to August 3, 1940. These show an increase of 1.948,202 freight carcases compared with the period from October 1, 1938, July 31, 1939, a rise of 18 per cent. North Island export killings rose from 7,187,223 to 8,933,980 601bs. freight carcases, and South Island figures advanced from 3.632.569 to 3,834.014. Both islands totalled 12,767,994, against 10,819,792 for the comparable period. Lamb killings increased by 639,092 carcases, going to 5,308,198 in the North Island and 5,073,397 in the South Island, the North Island increase being 568,103 and the South Island 70,989. Wether mutton killings showed totals of 1,131,151 for the North Island and 175,706 for the South Island, the total of 1,306,857 being a reduction of 139,038. However, mutton production as a whole was substantially in advance of the previous season, the killings of ewes for export rising by 766,732. North Island killings were 1,219,352 and South Island 700,210, a total of 1,919,562. Imperial Purchase Since, under the Imperial purchase agreement, all beef is exported frozen, previous exports for chilled beef are grouped with frozen for comparative purposes and show an increase of 285,172 quarters. The total was 687,058, and of this the North Island contributed 672,515 quarters. Killings of porkers totalled 101,527, this being a drop of 252,490. However, it is stated that the decline was more than made up by increased killings of the heavier weight baconers. North Island killings were 313,964 and South Island 325,737, or 139,069 above those of the previous season. When the production of pork of both classes is compared on a weight basis, this season’s killings show an improvement of 11,392 freight carcases. All other classes also showed increases. Boneless beef rose from 717,700 carcases to 863,963, the North Island’s contribution being 806,549. Boneless bobby veal went from 95,910 to 106,304, the North Island figure being 90,906. Sundries rose from 384,222 to 458,663 carcases, the North Island total being 342,858.
