WEEK-END GOLF
PLAY IN WAIKATO FINE ROUND BY GLAD ING COUNTRY CLUBS’ EVENTS (By “Fyffe Scot”) The feature of week-end golf was another 68 at St. Andrews by Bob Glading. At one stage in this round lie looked as if he might better his previous best, a 67. Out in 33, his golf was flawless, except for one little slip at the fourth. Bunkered off his iron and second to the green, he recovered well to within four feet of the pin. However, the putt on the fast green just slipped past the hole. His figures out were 3. 4,3, 5,3, 3, 5,4, 3—33.
Coming in Glading started 3,3, 4, 4,3, and at this stage required four 4’s for 66 and on the way he was playing he looked as if he would get them. However, a good second to the 15th found the bunker. Recovering to within six feet of the hole, it was with dismay that he saw his putt rim the cup. At the 16th, 470 yards, he was 10 feet from the hole with a drive and No. 4 iron. The putt for a three stopped an inch short. A 4 at the 17th still left a 4 for 67, but his tee shot found the bunker on the left of the fairway at the 18th and a five made the final score 68. From this it appears as if Glading will have no trouble in living up to his plus 2 handicap and at the same time it is unfortunate that the war will now make it impossible for him to make the trip overseas, which he had in view to try himself out against the headliners. The other interest at St. Andrew’s during the week-end was the semifinals of the Captain’s and Vicecaptain’s Trophies. In the Captain’s Trophy Etheridge and Ladner had a very close game with Ladner just prevailing on the last green after playing the steady golf which he has been displaying for some time. Etheridge broke 80 for the round but was not quite as brilliant as he has been on occasions recently. In the other semi-final M. A. Kelly played G. Marriott. Kelly dropped strokes to bogey only at the Ist and Bth going out, and with Marriott a bit off form was five up at this stage. The position was still the same going to the 12th. Kelly got bogey 4’s at the 12th and 13th and, despite conceding strokes at these holes, won on the 13th. Vice-captain’s Trophy
In the Vice-captain’s Trophy semifinals S. Mayes with an 81, which was five strokes below his handicap, made it too hot for H. Clarke. The other semi-final between M. M. Frost and N. Cann was a much closer game, with Cann getting the verdict on the 18th after being down all the way. Lochiel had a close-day tournament to raise funds for patriotic purposes last week and the honours of the day for the 36-hole gross went to J. Haggo with two steady rounds of 80 and 82. In the A grade 36-hole net medal D. Hemi, on the 14 mark, was the winner with a gross 87 in the morning. Hemi improved on this to do an 83 in the afternoon, while T. Lorimer on 20 played below his handicap in both rounds to win the B grade 36-hole net. In the Stableford competition L. Brown won the A grade with 34 while F. Cramp won the B grade with 37 points. In conjunction with this Cramp also won A. Ensoll’s trophy for the 36hole Stableford, having an aggregate of 70 points for the two rounds. To gain these points Cramp did two good rounds of 82 and 86, both scores being below his 15 handicap. The result of the good scoring during the week-end at Lochiel was quite a number of handicap reductions and Frank Cramp was the first to be brought down t\yo strokes to 13. Others to lose two strokes were D. Hemi now 12, T. Lorimer now 18, J. E. Murray now 20. Those reduced one stroke were L. Brown now on 10, and C. Cowley now on 17. This makes seven strokes that Cowley has been reduced this season and must class him as one of Lochiel’f most improving players. Play at the Narrows At the Narrows the final round of the Camfosa Cup was played, but there was no change in positions. Don Coventry’s first two Stableford rounds of 33 and 29 proved to be the winning score, while the same applied in the women’s section in the Jones Cup, Mavis Wallace’s first two rounds of 32 and 30 points being the winning score. Next week the Narrows will begin the club championships.
At Ngahinapouri club championship results were as follows:—E. Reid beat C. Reid, 5-4; T. Livingstone had the same margin win over W. Payne; and A. Morgan the same over W. Reid. The game between G. Bainbridge and D. McGregor was more closely contested, victory going to Bninbridge by 2 and 1. It was unfortunate that Seifert could not take part in the Ngahinapouri Club championship as he is in a class by himself at that club and would have been certain to have made the champion of champions game at the end of the season. Congratulations are to be handed out to Mrs Seifert for winning the Ngahinapouri Handicap Cup against all comers, men included. Gordonton Championship In the final she played Mrs G. Mills and the golf was very good, Mrs Seifert playing two below her handicap. Mrs Mills must have been about the same as Mrs Seifert gained the verdict only on 'the last green by a good putt. Next week Mrs Mills will have a chance of balancing up her wins and losses as she plays Mrs Wilkinson in the final of the club championship. Mrs Wilkinson is the present lady champion of the club. At Gordonton the junior championship was finalised and L. Drummond, playing below his handicap, was the winner in a close game against O. Farquhar by 2 and 1. In the Handicap Cup semi-finals R. Forsman defeated F. Parsons two and one, while Ross Bruce beat A. Boyd by four and three. This left Forsman in two finals and his prospects of picking up a trophy this season appear bright. Waikato golfers are reminded that entries will close on August 19 fo'-’ the biggest local golfing event tof the year, the Silver King Cups, to be decided at St. Andrews. This event is open to any amateur or professional, there being a cup for amateurs and one for professionals. Play is on handicap and programmes have been sent out.
