ANSWERED THE CALL

FARMERS JOIN FORCES “The response from the agricultural industries for men for the fighting forces has been such that all connected with them can feel justly proud, and a considerable number have gone from the dairy farms of our district,” said Mr W. Marshall, chairman of directors. “This is likely to accentuate the difficulties regarding farm labour which existed last season, and a study of the position leads to the conclusion that more reliance will have to be placed on the use of married men. To assist in their employment the Government has decided to subsidise the erection, under the Rural Housing Act, of permanent dwellings, to make available temporary accommodation at a rental of 5s a week and also to subsidise married men who leave their homes to go to farm work.

“Public Works employees have been individually interviewed and a large number have indicated willingness to take farm work. This may not be just the labour the farmer is looking for, hut to the extent that it can be used, the war effort will be assisted, and I would urge any of our suppliers requiring labour to get in touch with the nearest placement officer and discuss any difficulty they may have.

“It is also probable that further difficulties will arise, when, in the near future, men are called up to undergo a period of training in the Territorial Force for home defence. It is regrettable that this will be necessary, but it is imperative that we prepare so that the shores of this fair land can be defended. “It is hoped that sufficient notice will be given to afford time to organise replacements, but it is sure to be difficult and we shall need all the goodwill and co-operation that we are capable of, if the men are to be released for this essential task and maximum production is to be attained.”
