BRITAIN’S ATTITUDE j , (omctal wireless) RUGBY, August 13 The Government’s attitude toward the position of the Emperor Haile ; Selassie and recognition of the j Italian conquest of Abyssinia was ! stated in the House of Lords by Lord ; Caldecote, who said the Government I had let it be known that in view of Italy’s act of deliberate aggression in resorting to war against this country it felt entitled to reserve complete liberty of action in regard to any commitments entered into in the , past with the Italian Government j relating to the North and East Afrii can and Mediterranean areas. This declaration covered the de 1 jure recognition under the Anglo- | Italian agreement of 1938 of Italy’s : conquest of Abyssinia. He stated that the Government , attached full importance to tTe question of recognising Haile Selassie as the lawful ruler of Abyssinia and the possibility of giving him assist- ! ance to overthrow the Italian aggressor and rcoccupy the throne.
