WITHOUT A FRIEND
IF BRITAIN DEFEATED CONSCRIPTION FAVOURED (Uruoq Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 15, 3.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 14 Colonel Knox, Secretary to the Navy, told the Military Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives that conscription is necessary because the United States is facing the most serious and gravest crisis in her history in the “event that England goes down. I pray God that that does not happen—if it does we will be left without a friend in the world.”
Senator Andrews asked whether, in the event of Englajid’s defeat, the United States should use islands like Bermuda for air bases. Colonel Knox answered: “We should have air and submarine bases along the entire range of islands up and down the coast.”
Mr Knudsen presented a memorandum to the Ways and Means Committee of the House stating that an army of 2,000,000 could be placed in the field fully equipped by October, 1943.
