PAPERS, BOOKS, PERIODICALS STATEMENT BY CHANCELLOR (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 15, 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 14 The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Kingsley Wood, announced in the House of Commons last night that he would not persist in the proposal to tax newspapers, books and periodicals. A press that is not only free but also widely distributed is necessary at this time. Sir Kingsley added that books should be exempt from tax, at least for the present. Copyright) BERLIN, Aug. 14 An air raid alarm was sounded at 1,35 a,m., and the “ ail clear ” at 2.22 a.m. No explosions or anti-aireraft ■ fire were heard.
