GOVERNMENT PRAISED

MEAT AND WOOL PURCHASE (By Teleg-rapli.—rress Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday Praise for the Government was included in the annual report of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union, presented to members today. “Your executive wishes to express its appreciation of the good work done in the interests of producers of meat and wool by the Government when arranging contracts with Great Britain for the taking over of our wool and meat under the commandeer,” states the report. “It will be recognised that work of such magnitude required the closest application and energy by the Minister concerned and the heads of his department. “Your executive wishes especially to thank the Director-General of Agriculture, Mr A. H. Cockayne, who has carried a very heavy responsibility as controller of meat and wool. He and his officers have given great service to the producers.

“Mr H. M. Christie, chairman of the Wool Council, also deserves the thanks of woolgrowers for the good work that he and his council have done. Your executive is fully appreciative of the grave responsibility carried by the Ministers and various Government departments concerned in arranging for the purchase and transit of our products under the commandeer.”
