FAT STOCK SALES GREAT DEMAND FOR SHEEP HIGHEST PRICES FOR YEARS The highest prices since 1923 were realised by wethers at the Westfield fat stock sale yesterday, ranging up to 60s. A further .rise of Is per 1001 b. occurred in ox beef rates, while cow beef remained steady. Good quality vealers were scarce in the calf section. Pig values generally showed a slight drop. Ox beef sold up to 42s per 1001 b. The best price for a steer was £2O, for a beast from Mr W. J. Potter, of Karaka. Last week’s top bid was £l7 12s 6d. Cows and heifers sold well at late rates, making to £ls, against £l3 15s. Values for wethers rose as high as 60s a head, as against the top price of 44s 6d last week. The ewe yarding also was a small one, and values rose as high as 475, compared with 395. Rates for an average entry of lambs improved, two pens of extra good quality making to 48s. The best price at the previous sale was 365. Competition for calves was very keen and all quotations remained fully firm. Runners brought to £lO 12s 6d, compared with £lO 19s, while vealers sold to £8 3s, against £7 17s. Prices for pigs generally were lower, baconers making to £4 15s, and porkers to £3 17s, compared with last week’s top bids of £4 17s and £4, respectively. Cows and heifers came forward in good numbers and sold freely at last week’s quotations. Extra choice ox. £2 2s per 100 lb; choice and prime, £i 19s to £2 Is; secondary and plain, £1 15s to £1 18s; extra prime young cow and heifer, £1 13s to £1 17s; choice and prime, £1 7s to £1 9s; extra heavy prime steers. £lB to £2O; heavy, £ls 17s 6d to £l7 ss; lighter, £l3 15s to £ls 15s; light, £ll to £l3 10s; small and unfinished, £lO to £lO 15s; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £l2 to £ls; heavy, £lO to £ll 10s; lighter, £8 to £9; other killable cows, £5 10s to £7. Sheep: The quality of a small yarding of sheep was outstanding. Competition was again keen and a further rise in values took pface for both wethers and ewes. One pen of extra heavy prime wethers, £2 14s to £2 16s 3d; heavy, £2 10s to £2 13s; medium. £2 6s to £2 9s; light, £2 Is to £2 ss; plain and unfinished. £1 10s to £1 18s; extra heavy prime young and maiden ewes, £2 to £2 7s; heavy, £1 16s to £1 19s; lighter. £1 10s to £1 8s; other ewes, 5s to £l. Lambs: An average entry sold under keen competition at advanced rates. Two pens of excellent quality lambs made £2 4s and £2 8s respectively. Extra heavy prime lambs. £1 16s to £2; heavy. £1 12s to £1 14s; medium, £1 10s to £1 18s; lighter, £1
5s to £1 7s; light, £1 2s to £1 4s; small and plain 18s to £1 Is. Calves: There was an increased yarding, but good quality vealers were in short supply. Competition was very keen for all classes, with values fully up to late quotations. Runners, £5 to £lO 12s 6d; heavy vealers, £7 to £8 3s; medium, £5 15s to £6 15s; light, £4 to £5 10s; small, £1 to £3 10s; unfinished and bucketfed, £1 5s to £2; bobby calves, 5s to 18s.
Pigs: There was an increased offering. The demand was not so strong, and values for all classes were lower. Choppers, £3 to £4 4s; heavy baconers, £4 7s to £4 15s; medium, £4 to £4 4s; light, £3 14s to £3 18s; heavy porkers. £3 13s to £3 17s; medium, £3 2s to £3 9s; light, £2 14s to £2 17s; small and unfinished, £2 8s to £2 13s; stores, £2 7s to £2 16s; slips, £1 14s to £2; weaners, £1 8s to £1 12s.
