SENTENCE REDUCED
SUBVERSIVE STATEMENT CONVICTION UPHELD (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Tuesday An appeal by Roy Stanley, organiser for the Carpenters’ Union, against his conviction by a magistrate and sentence of four months’ imprisonment for a subversive statement, was heard by Mr Justice Fair in the Supreme Court. Mr V. R. Meredith represented the Crown and Mr Henry appeared for the appellant. The conviction was upheld. On the question of the sentence, His Honour quoted the cases of two other men who had been similarly charged and sentenced. He said the magistrate properly sentenced Stanley, but His Honour was loth to impose, or allow to remain, a sentence which appeared heavy compared with those passed upon the two other men he mentioned. He believed the ends of justice would be met if Stanley’s sentence were reduced to two months’ imprisonment.
