SOLDIERS FAREWELLED

FUNCTION AT MATANGI The Matangi Hall was filled to capacity on a recent evening, with relatives and friends of local men who are leaving New Zealand with the third echelon. The decorative scheme was most attractive, the stage being transformed into a lounge, with native ferns and bowls of Iceland poppies, while a profusion of multi-coloured flags was suspended above the dancers, giving the hall a delightful festive appearance. To Mr and Mrs W. J. Bourke, the host and hostess, and 1 the energetic committee, whose efforts contributed greatly to the success of the function, much praise is due. Excellent dance music was supplied by a Regimental Band from Cambridge, with extras by Mrs Forster, Miss E. Casey and Mr Alan Weir. Mr Randal was master of • ceremonies. j During the evening community singing and vocal solos by Miss Elsie Shaw, Mr W. Trubshaw, Mr W. Wright and Mr J. Battersby were much enjoyed. Miss Kath Trubshaw, Miss Mavis Shaw and Mr Battersby played the accompaniments. Before the supper adjournment the guests of the evening, amid much cheering, were piped to the stage by Mr A. Weir. Mr Bourke, in an appropriate address, congratulated the soldiers, Sergeant A. Trubshaw, Gunner Dale, Gunner P. Meade, Gunner Randal, Private A. Buckingham, Private Charmers and Gunner Craig, on their action in enlisting for overseas service, and wished them a speedy and safe return. He then presented them each with a pocket book, containing £2, from the residents of the district. Apologies were received from Privates Annett, Gooding, Rochell, Wild, O’Kane and Stevens.
