£375 AWARDED
LIBEL ACTION COURT CASE REPORT THE STANDARD AS DEFENDANT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Monday After a retirement of two hours and 25 minutes the jury returned with a verdict of £375 damages in the Supreme Court case before Mi Justice Fair, in which Francis Simpson, of Auckland, printer, sued the New Zealand Worker Printing and Publishing Company, Limited, of Wellington, publishers of the Standard, and its publisher, John Glover. The plaintiff had claimed £IOOO damages following a report in the Standard of Magistrate’s Court proceedings in Auckland last April, which referred to him as a Communist and “associated with the Communist paper, the People’s Voice.” Mr Dickson and Mr Henry appeared for the plaintiff and Mr A. H. Johnstone, K.C., and Mr Sullivan for the defence. Following the verdict His Honour allowed costs according to scale, but refused Mr Dickson’s request for second counsel’s fee, saying he considered the case could have been handled by one counsel quite adequately.
