FOR CHRISTMAS
SOLDIERS’ PARCELS STANDARD CONTENTS FIXED FIRMS TO MAKE PUDDINGS (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday Now that overseas transport is rather a difficult problem it is essential to plan well ahead. That is what has been done by the National Patriotic Fund Board with a view to ensuring that every New Zealand soldier, sailor and airman serving abroad will receive a Christmas parcel from this country. The contents of the parcel have been decided on as follows:—Plum pudding (lib), Christmas cake (lib), tinned chocolate (ilb), shortbread or ginger-nuts (lib), cigarettes or pipe tobacco, a small tin of New Zealand fruit, and one handkerchief. Altogether, provision will require to be made for 30,000 parcels. On a prorata basis, Auckland is being asked to supply 9930, Taranaki 1350, Nelsc*i 810, Otago 2790, East Coast (North Island) 660, Wellington 6090, Westland 600, Southland 1380. Hawke’s Bay 1500, Marlborough 390, and Canterbury 4500. As the board has been advised that it is essential that Christmas puddings must be specially packed to ensure their successful transport to the other side of the world, the board has asked the provincial patriotic councils to arrange for the making and packing of the puddings by firms who cater for such goods. Many women, no doubt, will regret this is so, but they will have the opportunity of baking Christmas cakes and providing other contents of the Christmas parcel.
