RELAXED EMBARGO
POTATOES AND ORANGES AUSTRALIAN COMPLAINT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday The Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, referred to a cablegram received from Australia on August 7 to the effect that protests against the importation of New Zealand potatoes had been made in the House of Representatives by a member of Parliament on behalf of Tasmania, which is the main potato producing area for New South Wales. “The question was raised whether a permit had been given for the entry of New South Wales oranges to New Zealand, and it appears obvious that this question has been misreported, or else some ignorance exists as to importations of oranges into New Zealand,” said Mr Nash. “Since the Government assumed control of the importation of citrus fruits in 1938 Australia has supplied the bulk of the importations. Of this quantity New South Wales has in each year supplied approximately 60 per cent of the total. This is a complete answer to the question as to whether a permit has been obtained for the entry of New South Wales fruit into New Zealand. “As the result of negotiations with the Commonwealth Government, New Zealand was permitted to export to Australia a total of 5000 tons of potatoes in controlled quantities from July to October.”
