EGGS FOR BRITAIN

PROPOSALS HANG FIRE COUNCIL SEEKS INFORMATION (By Telegrapn.—special to Times) WELLINGTON, Friday The following letter has been sent to the Minister of Marketing from the Primary Production Council, Mar ton: “Farmers were recently urged to make a special effort to produce as many eggs as possible for export to Great Britain. It was thought that the sudden loss of the Danish and Dutch sources of supply would be serious. Resulting from this appeal, it is known already that widespread preparations are under way for greatly increased production in the coming season. 1941-42. “After careful consideration, this Primary Production Council considers that the Government should do the decent thing and make an announcement on the following points.— 1. Has the British Government asked for the eggs? 2. Does the New Zealand Government intend to export the eggs? 3. Does the Government intend to organize the receipt and regular despatch of export eggs? 4. Does the Government intend

to stabilize the price of eggs on the local market and offer a fixed price for export eggs? Price Factor “Several attempts have been made to secure an official expression on these points, but without any success. Furthermore, the impression prevails, from information already to hand, that the British Government may have asked for eggs, but that the New Zealand Government is quite undecided as to whether it will or will 'not export any. It seems there, is no intention of organizing receiving depots in the country towns till November, 1940, and then only if egg . fall to a low price levef— lOd. a dozen has been mentioned, but then it costs lljd. to produce eggs. That’s ‘all in* and no mistake. "There does not appear to be any suggestion of fixing a price for export eggs, nor any attempt to stabilize eggs on the local market. The people who are making a livelihood out of eggs should be assured their market is not to be ruined.”
