WAR EXPENSES ACCOUNT
FINANCES FOR QUARTER Receipts in the War Expenses Account during the first three months of the present financial year, which commenced on April 1, amounted to £3.276,961, according to the Gazette. Expenditure, was as follows: Navy, £139,600: army, £1,257,022; air, £694,979; civil, £6233. In addition, £SOO was transferred for amortisation of debt. Securities held total £150,000, and there is a balance of £1,028,628. Taxation provided £678,250 of the total receipts. It was made up as follows:—lncome lax, £129,339; estate duty, £80.161; succession duty, £22,333; gift duty, £11,711; Customs duties, £226,923; beer duty, £39,789, gold export duty, £42,994; postage, £125,000. Stock issued totalled £350,000, interest-free stock issued, £486,762, and Treasury bills, £780,000. Among miscellaneous receipts, totalling £28,570, there are donations of
£11,798. The balance at the beginning of the year was £953,380.
