NAZI THREATS
TUNNEL UNDER CHANNEL INVASION OF BRITAIN ! SHIPS AND PLANES DESTROYED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) BERLIN, August 10 The German news agency says: “The architect who erected the Siegfried Line is now building a submarine tunnel under the Channel by which Britain can be invaded.” The news agency claims that nearly 1,000,000 tons of British shipping have been sunk or damaged in the last three weeks, of which 345,000 tons were sunk by submarines, 275,000 tons by aerial attacks, and 100,000 tons by naval attacks. The German High Command states: “The destruction of two British convoys totalling 75,000 tons, damage to seven other ships, and 1 the annihilation of 51 British aeroplanes in one day shows that the attack against England has not only started in its deadliest form, but its most decisive hour is approaching. “Our reconnaissances over England have been carried out according to plan, especially over the east and south coasts, and also the sea area north of the Shetlands. Our fighters have attacked British armament works, harbours and shipyards, and bombed the aircraft works of Pobjoy Motor and Aircraft, Limited, at Rochester, and aircraft works at Faversham, where extensive fires and violent explosions occurred. A large number of small-calibre bombs hit dockyards at Newcastle, and Government yards at Sheerness and Chatham. The landing-ground at an aerodrome near Bristol was destroyed by bombs. “Two enemy aeroplanes were shot down by anti-aircraft guns, bringing the total enemy aeroplanes shot down by anti-aircraft fire to 1500.” The High Command also says a German submarine sank an 8700-ton armed British merchant ship.
