TAXATION IN BRITAIN
EFFECT ON SALARIES PRIME MINISTER’S £3837 PRIMATE DOWN TO £4374 LONDON, Aug. 11 Alter paying Income and super taxes, Mr Winston Churchill has only £3837 left out of his Prime Minister’s salary of £IO,OOO. The Archbishop of Canterbury’s £15,000 a year is whittled down by taxation to £4374, out of which he has to maintain Lambeth Palace and the official residence at Canterbury. Other outstanding examples of how the present taxation affects salaries of leading public men are:— Each member of the Cabinet retains only £2601 out of his £SOOO salary.
Tiie Chief Justice has £3501 left out of £BOOO. To allow Mr Churchill to receive for himself the full £IO.OOO a year ho would need to be paid a gross salary of £68,000.
