SOCIAL SECURITY
BENEFITS LAST QUARTER INCREASE OVER LAST YEAR Benefits amounting to £1,523,468 have been paid from the Social Security Fund in the first three months of the current financial year. This compares with £1,172,272 in the same period to June 30 last year, according to information in the Gazette. Age benefits amounting to £1,149,781, accounted for the greater proportion of expenditure, and compared with £894,438 in the first three months of last year. Other payments, with last year’s figures in parenthesis, are: Invalidity, £162,431 (£131,777); widows, £137,652 (£98,844); family, £47,027 (£9860); miners, £15,105 (£15,375); unemployment, £6901 £15,908); orphans. £3023 (£1053); sickness. £1391 (£4776); Maori War, £156 (£240). Receipts in the first three months were £3,865,773, made up as follows: Social security charge, £2,845,355; registration levy, £89,100; penalties for late payments, £4677; fines, £B3; miscellaneous. £5: transfer from Consoliated Fund. £400.000; balance at beginning of year, £523.301; receipts due to Employment Promotion Fund. £2652. Total receipts in the same period of last year were £3,324,502.
