MARINES TO REMAIN DEFENCE OF BRITISH SECTOR (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 10, 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, August 9 Mr Sumner Welles indicated that the United States marines will remain at Shanghai, at least at present. He said the British withdrawal had no effect whatever on the United States’ policies and position in the Far East. He said that numerous details j must be worked out by the local | authorities in Shanghai, including whether United States marines should take over the defence of the sector evacuated by the British. He said he doubted the accuracy of the Shanghai report that 600 marines are en route to Shanghai from Honolulu. COMMAND AT SHANGHAI j JAPANESE REAR-ADMIRAL (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) ; (Received August 10. 12.20 p.m.) SHANGHAI, August 9 The British withdrawal will make the Japanese Rear-Admiral Moriji Takeda commander of the Shanghai defence forces, including the fourth regiment of the United States Marines.
