TRADE WITH ENEMY

BRITISH LEAD FOLLOWED (By Telegrapn.—press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Regulations for restricting enemy commerce, which were published today, have the effect of making the measures recently announced as having been adopted by the Government in the United Kingdom effective in New Zealand. The Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, said this evening the general procedure adopted in the United Kingdom, and which would be followed here, should occasion arise, was explained in announcements made in the House of Commons a few days ago by Dr. Dalton, Minister of Economic Warfare, and Mr Ronald Cross, Minister of Shipping. The existing New Zealand legislation in regard to wartime control of our trade and shipping was considered to provide the necessary machinery to give effect to the recently announced schemes, but the regulations now made would give additional powers for the seizure of offending ships and uncertifioated cargo, wherever loaded.

The Minister mentioned that regulations for restricting the commerce of Italy, which were also published here to-day, and which have been effective in the Dominion since June 11, had the effect of applying to Italy reprisals and measures already in operation against Germany under the export prohibition emergency regulations, which had been in force since the outbreak of the war. All goods exported from New Zealand were subjected to the requirement of licenses. The new regulations would therefore not involve exporters in any additional formalities.
