FOREIGN SHIPPING
UNDER BRITISH CONTROL MORE THAN 9,000,000 TONS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, August 8 The Ministry of Shipping has revealed that more than 9,000,000 tons of foreign shipping, comprising vessels of 500 tons gross and over, are under the control of the British Empire and the Allies. The total includes 5,500,000 tons of Norwegian shipping and about 3,000.000 tons of Dutch. The Belgian and Polish Governments control 500,000 tons. In addition, Britain has seized nearly 500,000 tons of Danish shipping, and has requisitioned 500,000 tons from the French. Another 1,250,000 tons of neutral shipping is on time charter to Britain. This tonnage is distributed throughout the world and is free to engage in trade, except contraband trade with the enemy.
