TOPICS OF THE DAY
Enemies of Democracy It has been recently said that the “three great enemies of democracy are fear, prejudice and hatred.” Can there be any doubt that this triumvirate of emotions is largely responsible for the wretched tumult that is splitting the peace of the world into crumbling shreds ? Fear, prejudice and hatred have no abiding place but in the human mind. It is there that they gnaw, and consume and destroy. It is there that the warmth of confidence fades; the strength of reason becomes flabby and frail, and the tenderness of love becomes virulent and venomous. In this age of civilisation, when the light of spiritual thought is growing in warmth and power, it behoves the individual to analyse the contents of his heart to discover what of bitterness can be sweetened; what of hatred can be softened; what of bias may be silenced, that charity and love and confidence may become compelling forces in restoring a harmony that has been hidden by the smoke of battle and the clouds of dissension.—H. D. R. in the Mitchell (S.D.) Gazette.
