INDOOR BASKETBALL

Y.M.C.A. LEAGUE TWO GRADES FINALISED VERY CLOSE COMPETITION The fourteenth series of matches played in the inter-house basketball league’s competitions this week saw the completion of the men’s A grade championship and the women’s B grade championship. Y.M.C.A. “A” finally established themselves as the 1940 champions by defeating Athletic “A” last week by the narrow margin of 19—18. The Y.M.C.A. team thoroughly deserve their position, having played brilliant and clean basketball throughout the season. Their only defeat during the season was at the hands of Nomads, captained by George Porteous, who once again fill the position of run-ners-up. The women’s B grade competition was even more closely contested, the winning position being open to three teams prior to this week’s matches. Alfa Laval, by defeating Dalgetys by B—6 in the final match, took a one-point lead from that team, which had been in top place the whole season. Public Trust, who were promoted from C grade after the first round, justified their inclusion by finishing in third place. Had they won their final match against Hookers, they would have been equal with Alfa Laval necessitating a play-off. Hookers, in fourth position, played well throughout the season hut took one or two matches too easily and were unexpectedly defeated, after having defeated the three top teams. Snecial Competitions The Alfa Laval and Y.M.C.A. teams are to be congratulated on winning their respective grades in the face of such strong opposition as was presented. The remaining Tuesday nights prior to a representative fixture, the knockout tournament and the annual dance, will be occupied by a special competition in each of these grades in which the top four teams play each other and the lower four teams play each other. The men’s B and women’s A and C grades still have four series of matches to play before finality is reached. In the women’s A grade Ellis and Burnand and Leaders at present occupy top position with 24 points while Arawa are only two points behind. Macduffs hold the lead in women’s C grade with 22 points, Woolworths being strong challengers with 20 points. The men’s B grade shows W. B. Youngs in a strong position four points ahead of Turners and Fows, and Findlays. Both these teams have yet to play Youngs and the competition is still open.
