ESPIONAGE NETWORK
ALLEGATION AGAINST BRITAIN REUTER’S MANAGER’S SUICIDE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received July 30, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 29 The American Press correspondent at Tokio says that the Foreign Office disclosed that the Britons were arrested by the military police under the direction of the prosecutors as a first step against an alleged countrywide British espionage network. TOKIO, July 28 Twelve Britons have been arrested since Saturday, it is believed in connection with military secrets. Sir Robert Craigie, British Ambassador, twice protested, and requested information concerning the arrests. Mr Melville Cox, Far East manager of Reuters, jumped from a window while under examination, and died. The Ministries of War and Justice announced that they have rounded up Britishers accused of antiJapanese espionage. They said that Mr Cox committed suicide rather than face a probable conviction. Note Left for Wife A note addressed to his wife, found on Mr Cox’s person, reads: “I know what is best. Always my only love. I have been quite well treated, but there is no doubt how matters are going.” In the light of the above note it seems that with the progress of the investigation deceased became aware of the fact that he could not escape, conviction.” The War Ministry, in another announcement relative to the arrests said: “In view of the ever-increasing activities of foreign organisations in espionage and conspiracy in this country lately the military, under the direction of the prosecutors, made their first step on July 27 by arresting those constituting part of a British espionage network covering the entire country.”
