TIMBER PESTS
AUSTRALIAN TERMITES DRASTIC MEASURES NEEDED There is evidence that besides the common borer, wooden buildings in the north of New Zealand are troubled with Australian timber and soil termites, according to the annual report of the State Advances Corporation. ‘ In parts of the Dominion,” the report continues, “there is a growing tendency to adopt permanent materials in preference to timber for residential buildings. In view, however, of our national assets in the form of timber forests, it is the corporation's opinion that an active programme of scientific drying and pre-treatment of timber by producing and distributing interests is essential. "Such action would ensure a longterm life of utility to wooden buildings and maintain the confidence of lending institutions in this type of security,” the report states. "With a view to coping with soil-dwelling termites, the corporation has adopted for future loans in certain areas a condition providing for complete metal capping of foundations in housing construction.”
