FOOD SHORTAGE

~ ON THE CONTINENT ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS NAZI DEFICIENCIES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON. July 27 German-controlled radio broadcasts to the occupied territories now contain almost daily indications of the economic hardships which these countries are suffering under German occupation. As Germany’s own needs take precedence over those of the occupied areas, the broadcasts indicate where the shot is pinching in Germany. Germany’s difficulties over fuel oil are well known. An illustration of j what they mean for Norway was provided in a recent broadcast to Denmark. This stated that the Norwegian administration had decided to maintain only the most necessary coastal traffic, in order to save as mch as possible of the Norwegian oil supplies. According to the new scheme, no coastal districts in Norway will be connected with the outer world by both sea and land if one route is sufficient. Sufferings in Holland Holland, too, has to suffer to make up the deficiencies in Germany. Dutch housewives have received the following advice: — “ Housewives should be economical in the use of fuel. It is not necessary to wash knives, cups and silver three times a day in hot water. Once is sufficient. This saves water, soda, soap and fuel. We also recommend the use of hayboxes for cooking.” The announcer added that the use of raw • vegetables and fruit also saved fuel. Another announcement to the Dutch people explained that, on account of the shortage of chicken food, instructions had been given that poultry in Holland must be reduced to 6,000,000 head before September 15. This is approximately one third of the normal number. Two broadcast items from different parts of the vast network show 1 how the Nazis are relieving the food shortage in Germany by depriving , the peoples of the occupied territory. Disappearance of Butter The station at Brussels on Friday night apologised for the acute shortage of butter in Antwerp and, to a lesser extent, in all parts of Flanders. The announcer said that only a small part of the local butter supplies was purchased for the German Army. The disappearance of butter from the town markets was principally due, he suggested, to the ; fact that a “ gang of criminal dealers ” had purchased the butter at the dairies and from farmers. On the same night the Deutschiandsender German home programme included a triumphant announcement of a “ special addition to the butter ration of 125 grammes : per head of the population of Ger- : many.” Release of Prisoners i The food shortage in occupied France is forcing the Germans to release hundreds of thousands of prisoners, who are being deported to the unoccupied territory irrespective oi their original domicile, says a report from Berne, Switzerland. A batch of 26,000 have been released from a camp at Surgeres, north of Bordeaux. TURKISH DECREES FOREIGN NEWS BARRED ..United Tress Assn.—Elec. Tel.
