CHURCH FINANCE

DUTY ON GIFTS AND LEGACIES CONCERN AT LIKELY EFFECT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) DUNEDIN, Friday Meetings were held yesterday by the Presbytery and the Presbyterian Social Service Association concerning the new legislation which abolishes the exemption of charitable legacies and gifts from duty where the legacies exceed £IOOO and the gifts exceed £SOO. It was stated that this was likely to result in a heavy decline in the number of legacies and gifts, with a detrimental effect on church and charitable work. Resolutions were carried emphasising the seriousness of the position, in the relief which such bodies had long rendered the Government by doing work which might well prove a charge upon it. Satisfaction was expressed that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance had undertaken that the whole position would be reconsidered. Mr Nash is to receive a deputation next week.
