NATURE OF SOIL

NORTFI ISLAND SURVEYS ADAPTING FERTILISERS (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Saturday The Minister in Charge of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Hon. D. G. McMillan, said today that a general soil survey of the North Auckland peninsula and thence down to the Waikato had been completed and similar field work over the whole of the North Island was expected to be finished by the end

of September. The soil survey division of the department, the Minister said, was concentrating on an extensive general survey in order to obtain knowledge of the distribution of the Dominion’s main soil types. The information thus gathered would be used in planning for increased primary production. As the soil maps were prepared they were supplied to the Department of Agriculture, for use particularly in organising fertiliser trials. They would also be made available to the local production committees. In addition to the Auckland districts mentioned, the whole East Coast of the North Island, except an area between Gisborne and Wairoa, had been mapped, together with the Manawatu district, from Paekakanki to the Wanganui River and northward to Tafiiape.
