HAWKE’S BAY BARLEY
KEENNESS DECLARED LACKING (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) HASTINGS, Friday e Farmers in Hawke’s Bay were lackc ing in their endeavour to meet the e request of the Government to pre- ® pare for sowing 10,000 acres of barley, Mr C. J. Hamblyn, fields superintendent of the Department of Ag- ! Y riculture, told a meeting of fanners ’ in Hastings. He said that in comparison with ether districts Hawke’s - Bay was backward in its response, only about 3500 acres having been offered, of which about 2000 had been definitely arranged. One of the reasons was that big land-owners with the equipment. _ l suitable land and finance had not r taken the scheme up enthusiastically. One farmer said that Hawke's Bay n had been given a tall order when it had been asked to grow half of the - 20,000 acres which the North Island e had been asked to produce. Others ti suggested that the land was stocked e to the limit and there were compara- * tively few areas available suited to - the crop. —*■ l 1
