RECREATION CELEBRATION FINE PROGRAMME ARRANGED PROCEEDS TO PATRIOTIC FUNDS Covering many branches of social and recreational life, Hamilton’s ; Centennial recreation celebrations ; | will be held in the Waikato Winter ; i Show buildings, opening next Wed- ’ nesday night and closing on Satur- ■ day. Sponsored by the Hamilton ? Physical Welfare and Recreational Committee and the Centennial Committee the programme to be presented is very comprehensive and includes several features which have not previously been witnessed in New Zealand. The entire net pro- ; ceeds will be devoted to patriotic ' funds. The celebrations will open in Bledisloe Hall on Wednesday night with the Coronation of the Queen of the South, Mrs Gordon Matthews, who won the recent provincial queen carnival in aid of the sick, wounded and distress appeal. On similar lines to the coronation produced in Auckland at the close of the carnival, the fixture promises to be one of the most spectacular presentations seen in Hamilton. Carnival queens from other centres in the Waikato will also take part in the ceremony. With 15 teams taking part, an interhouse girls’ drill and marching competition and massed drill display will also be presented in Bledisoe Hall. Grand Centennial Concert Two major attractions are scheduled for Thursday night, one being an indoor athletic meeting and the other a grand Centennial concert. The former has been arranged by the Hamiton Amateur Athletic Club and will be decided in Bledisloe Hall. The concert, to be held in the Winter Show concert hall, will present Hamilton’s leading talent in dramatics, dancing, vocal items, elocution and orchestral items. A play will be presented by the Hamilton Playbox, and items will be given by the Hamilton Performers’ Club and the pupils of Mrs A. M. Fahey, Miss L. Swarbrick and Miss McKenzie and by Mr H. McLachlan’s orchestra. Friday night’s programme in Bledisloe Hall includes a boy scouts massed demonstration of bridge building, fire fighting and camping, ! a girl guides demonstration of handi- ) crafts, camping, skills and tests, and j a secondary schools massed drill dis- | play by pupils from the Hamilton High School and the Hamilton Technical High School. rnrnlvjil Vio-M
carnival -Mgnt The final night will be a carnival night and will be opened, by a procession of inter-house girls’ teams and dancers in national costumes of several countries. Traversing a route from Knox Street to Bledisloe Hall, the procession will be led oy the Hamilton Pipe Band and the \s£ning inter-house girls’ team. At the hall the following attractions will be presented: International folk dancing festival by girls in national costumes; 35 minutes’ cabaret entertainment by the Performers’ Club; 20 minutes’ Risley acrobatic act by Mr J. Bonham and his team of Auckland acrobats; a polo match on onewheel bicycles; a continuous performance by the Hamilton Magicians’ Club and dancing to conclude the evening. Many special attractions have been arranged in connection with the carnival night and supper will be prepared by the Women’s Patriotic Committee and served, by the dancing girls.
