CHANCELLOR AND BUDGET CRITICISM IN COMMONS lUnitca Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, July 25 In the resumption of the House of Commons debate on the Budget, Mr F. W. Pethwick-Lawrence (Labour — Edinburgh E.) said that the whole criticism of the Budget was on grounds that, although the Chancellor was imposing taxation that might bring in £126,000,000 this year and £239,000,000 in the full year, he was not putting on sufficient taxation. He doubted the Chancellor’s wisdom in not taking a bolder line at once with regard to income tax instead of keeping a bit in hand for a later Budget. The Labour Party, while not liking the idea of a purchase tax, was not opposed to the principle. Secret Session Next Week Answering objections following the announcement that a secret session of the House of Commons would be held on Tuesday to debate foreign affairs, the Lord Privy Seal, Mr C. R. Attlee, stated that the decision had been taken because the majority of the House seemed in favour and so that members might state theii case very fully and the Government might make the fullest possible reply. The Minister of Shipping, Mr R. H. Cross, will the same day make an important statement on Britain’s blockade.
