THE SABBATH
OBEDIENT SERVANTS Be sober, then; be vigilant; forbear To seek or covet aught beyond thy ; sphere; Only be strong to labour, and allow \ Thy Master’s will to appoint the ] where and how. Serve God; and winter's cold or j summer’s heat, • The breezy mountain or the dusty street, Scene, season, circumstance alike shall be His welcome messengers of joy to thee; His Kingdom is within thee; rise and prove A present earnest of the bliss above. —J. R. Lowell BEAUTY OF THE GOSPEL REVEALED IN HUMAN LIVES The Gospel as seen in the world is seen in human lives. Thus a godly life is regarded as an adornment of the Gospel. The beauty of a Christian life is like a frame in which the i Gospel is set off to advantage. It ! does not alter the Gospel any more | than the frame alters the picture, but ( j it adorns it. I This truth we have all realised in ! ! our experience. We have seen a | godly man live his religion in all the | varied relations of life. We instinci tively feel that the Gospel is adorned ! by such a life. On the other hand, i we have seen many professing ; Christians live inconsistent lives, and j we feel that the Gospel is disfigured by such lives. St. Paul’s language becomes clear to us when we look at it in the light of our own experience. We feel the force of this exhortation to “adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour” more when we con- | sider the reasons which should lead us to seek to adorn the Gospel of ! Christ. We should adorn the docI trine of Christ, for in so doing we glorify Christ Himself. We cannot think of the Gospel without thinking of Christ. He is the centre of the Gospel. We cannot disgrace our religion without disgracing our Lord. This should impress us with a sense of the duty of adorning the
doctrine of God our Saviour. We may not be able, from our talents, or position in the world, to influence many in favour of the Gospel, but it is possible for all of us to exert the higher influence of a holy life. Without that it will matter little how much talk or how eloquently we can talk. If our lives do not commend the Gospel our talk will be of little value. But the beauty of a holy life will give power to every word we speak and everything we do for Christ. If you ask what can I do for the Gospel, I reply you can live it. —Rev. Isaac Jolly.
