BLUE BOWL

This bowl was held between the potter’s hands, That knew its form before it yet had form; She knew what clay would take this shade of blue And watched the fire that burned the colour in. It stood upon a shelf displayed for sale: And now this bowl is mine to fill with boughs | Or sprays of yellow, gold or softer blues. Because I had the sum she asked, in turn I have a part of her—this bowl she dreamed. I could not make a bowl or dream it so. But now it makes me feel an artist, too. —Kay Lamb
