STAGE ACTIVITIES
A Terrible Setting The celebrity concert artists who appeared in Hamilton on Tuesday night could not have derived much inspiration from their platform surroundings, for the stage setting was rather terrible. Hangings of clashing colours, part of a garden scene, furniture that could hardly be called artistic, and rather sick-looking palms made the setting far from suitable for such distinguished performers. Message from Elaine Hamill Miss Maude Dempster, who returned to Hamilton this week after two years in Britain, brought a message from Elaine Hamill, the Hamilton girl who has won success on the 6tage. Miss Hamill was appearing with a repe'rtory company in Dundee in "Punch Without Judy.” Miss Dempster went “behind” after a performance, and found Miss Hamill Keenly interested in New Zealand. She sent a special message of greeting to the “Across the Footlights” page and friends in Hamilton. Gilbert and Sullivan in Melbourne The Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company is repeating in Melbourne the success scored in Sydney. “The Gondoliers” was the opening production. Ice Ballet Changes Show The Switzerland Ice Ballet, for the last weeks of its Melbourne season, changed its title to “The Ice Show of 1940.” Several new skating acts were put on, and the settings were said to be more spectacular than those in the original show.
