LINEN FLAX
DOMINION PROSPECT MACHINERY ORDERED (From a Correspondent) LONDON, Nov. 24 The 14 units of machinery to be installed as a plant for reaping and treating linen flax in the Rangiora district, North Canterbury, ordered by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research at New Zealand House in August, are to be shipped to the Dominion during the next fortnight. The machinery, made in Belgium, is valued at slightly over £IOOO. Linen flax fibre is used in the making of canvas duck for tents, tarpaulins, aeroplane fabrics, rope, and cordage. In wartime it is an essential product. Supplies were formerly received by Britain from Russia, until the Soviet ceased exporting. A proportion of the Irish crop is at present being shipped to America to provide part of the credit facilities for British purchases of munitions. Baltic shipments to Britain have ceased.
The opinion is held that there would be an excellent market for New Zealand linen flax in Britain, particularly during wartime.
