PETROL SUPPLY
MUST BE GUARDED POSITION DECLARED SERIOUS APPEALS FOR ECONOMY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday. In a statement to the Press, Mr W. W. Mulholland, Dominion president of the Farmers’ Union, said the reasons, which arose out of war conditions, that made it necessary to conserve supplies of petrol had been communicated to him confidentially. From this knowledge he could endorse the appeal to practice strict economy in the use of liquid fuel supplies. Accordingly he would appeal to farmers to do so, and also ask them that if the licensing system should be renewed they would limit the amounts they named in their applications strictly to the quantity they would require if they were sparing in its use. Mr C. L. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Motor Omnibus Association, said he had been supplied with confidential information in regard to petrol supplies, and was convinced that proprietors would appreciate the seriousness of the position and make every endeavour to reduce consumption. A joint statement of a similar nature was made by Mr J. H. Kirkwood, president of the Carriers’ Federation, and Mr J. B. Cullen, president of the Road Transport Alliance. The importance of petrol conservation as a war emergency measure has been stressed by the Hon. W. Hayward, chairman of New Zealand Passenger Services, Mr V. J. Leek, president of the New Zealand Taxi Proprietors’ Association. Members and motor transport operators are urged to exercise every possible economy.
