HOLIDAY MOTORING
CONDITION OF ROADS VERY FEW DIFFICULTIES DETAILS OF ROUGH AREAS Motorists are not likely to experience any difficulties on the main arterial routes during the Christmas week-end, according to a survey completed by the Hamilton officers of the Automobile Association (Auckland). Many road improvements have been carried out, and where improvements are still being made, assurances have been given that these will be left in good condition for motor traffic. In the event of wet weather during Christmas or New Year motoring, hold-ups may occur on the Waikaremoana and Cape Runaway routes, owing to unbridged streams and the likelihood of small slips. Rough surfaces may be expected between Whangarei and Russell, and Dargaville and Kaikohe. The TaupoNational Park Road is in reasonable order but tourists are advised to avoid the Desert Road between Tokaanu and Waiouru. The NapierTaupo Road is not recommended. Bay of Plenty Area On the Paeroa-Tauranga highway a short stretch of about two miles betwe/n Karangahake and Waikino is somewhat rough. On the OpotikiGisborne run short lengths of oneway traffic may be encountered. Thames-Coromandel and ThamesWhitianga routes are good but the connecting-link between Coromandel and Whitianga is in only fair condition. The Coroglen-Waihi road, via Tairua and Whangamata, is not recommended for light cars. Roading conditions generally on all the main routes in the southern portion of the North Island are good. The usual reconstruction work must be expected, but there are no roads where any undue difficulty need arise.
