TROTTING GOSSIP

The Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer carnival will open at Epsom on Wednesday of next week. Consistent Pacer Fit and well Sandusky has proved himself a consistent pacer and F. J. Smith’s representative in the Trotting Cup this year is not without prospects. He holds a record of 4.20 at Addington and a reproduction of his best should see him in the firing line. A Likely Novice Among the likely novices located at Epsom at present is Cavalryman, who, in his work, has impressed as one above the average in his class. He possesses a smooth action and should soon be seen to advantage as he is carrying a bright and healthy appearance. Arrived at Ejisom The visiting Australian pacer, Springfield Globe, who is to contest the Auckland Trotting Cup, and the novice pacer Brilliant *Globe, recently purchased by Mr E. G. Bridgens, have arrived at Epsom. The latter has gone into F. J. Smith’s stable. Battlefield Prior to his defeat last Saturday at Timaru Battlefield won twice in succession, annexing the Forbury Handicap (2 miles) and the New Brighton Handicap (1£ miles). Last season he raced npost consistently and the Man o’ War horse will need only to be himself on the day to add much to the interest of the Auckland Cup event. Prospects of Uenuku

In the summing up of the Cup prospects of Uenuku next week it would be as* well to discount his disappointing form of Claudelands, when that characteristic finishing run was absent. He has shown in the past that he is capable of better things and is the present holder of the Epsom mile and a-half record of 3.13 2-5. In Great Heart The champion Australian pacer, Lawn Derby, has been hitting out in impressive style at Epsom and promises to be in great heart for his record-breaking attempt at the approaching Summer meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club. The other morning in association with Bingen’s Best over a mile and a-quarter he clocked 1.9 for the final half-mile. Consistent Kenworthy Second lqgt year to Navy Blue, the consistent Kenworthy has been striding along in solid style over the past week and it should not be on the score of condition if he fails to give of his best in this season’s big contest. Off 36 yards he will need to give of his best, of course, but he will, nevertheless, claim a following as always be relied upon for an honest effort. Nawton Parrish Nawton Parrish is in forward condition for racing over the holiday period and his recent work indicates that he is fast returning to the form that won him several races a couple of seasons ago. On Tuesday morning at Auckland headquarters he clocked the best figures for the morning over a mile and impressed by the manner in which he was revelling in his work over the concluding stages of the trial. Good Credentials Bill B. comes from the south with excellent 'bredentials for consideration in the summing up of x Auckland Cup prospects. He won over two miles at the Auckland February meeting and more recently, this season, he has twice won over the distance at Addington, going 4.23 on the latter occasion. He will be driven by his trainer, J. Bryce, who claims a wonderful record with Cup horses, having to his credit six New Zealand Trotting Cups and five Auckland Trotting Cups.

Looks the Part The Australian-bred Icevus, one of the ruling fancies for the Auckland Trotting Cup, is reported to be in great fettle for engagements ahead. He has disclosed staying ability

above the average and his success at Dunedin, alone, when he won the President's Handicap very decisively in 4.21 4-5 will claim him a firm following on the machines. Red Flush Red Flush drew attention to his prospects in the Auckland Centennial Gold Trotting Cup, when he finished brilliantly to win the Cup Trial event at the recen£ Summer meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club. Further he has a fine record over two miles, scoring six firsts and a second over, the distance. His best time is 4.25 2-5 but he has given every indication that he will go faster, lie will be driven by his trainer, M. Stewart, who, it will be recalled, sprang a surprise last year with Navy Blue. Rocks Ahead Retired The well-known pacer Rocks Ahead has run her last race and nas been mated with the American nerse Sandydale. One of the best pacing mares ever bred in Southland, Locks Ahead was successful over all distances from a mile to two miles. During her career she contested 89 races for 16 firsts, 9 seconds, and 13 thuds, and won £3556 in stakes. She commenced racing as a four-year-old in Southland, where she was bred and owned and was successful at her first start. A feature of net fine record was that she was driven m ah her important successes by J. Walsh, of Gore.
