FIRE STATION SCHEME
NEW AUCKLAND BUILDING AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Amended plans for the new central fire station for Auckland, which will involve a saving of nearly £20,000, were adopted by the Auckland Fire Board today. It was decided to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise £140,000 to cover the cost of the new scheme. The area on which the new building is to stand, situated at the corner of Pitt Street and Grey Avenue, was acquired two years ago at a cost of £25,000, and £23,000 of this amount which is still owing is included in the loan for which sanction is sought. The principal alterations in the original plan relate to living accommodation. The actual building cost will be reduced from £127,740 to an estimated figure of £108,793, providing accommodation for 62 men. For married men there will be 21 houses and eight flats, and for the single men 33 cubicles.
