CAMBRIDGE FESTIVAL
COMPETITIONS SOCIETY REVIEW OF CIRCUMSTANCES (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Wednesday The state of affairs which led up to the postponement of the Cambridge competitions festival this year was reviewed at the annual meeting of the society last night. The president, Mr Edgar James, presided over a small attendance of members. Officers were elected in anticipation of a festival being possible in 1940. Mr James said that right up to the closing of entries last September the society was on the way towards holding a successful festival. There had been many entries in, including a good deal of promising new talent. Excellent adjudicators had also been engaged. With the outbreak of war and the petrol restrictions, it was decided by the executive not to hold the festival. The schedules had been printed, and there ha d been other expenditure, whichs had depleted the society’s funds by half. If the festival were resumed there would probably be some benefit from the expenditure already made. “A loss was made, but it might have been much greater had the festival been held,” said the president. The first announcement of war was the worst shock, and people were very unsettled. If we had gone on all our money would have been expended, and it would have been very difficult to make a fresh start.” Mr Jar-Ties added that the society still has £SO saved. The future was uncertain, and a decision would have to be left to a later date. In the meantime officers could be elected, and membership subscriptions would still be accepted. It was mentioned by Mr James that even with the festival cancelled, subscriptions and donations amounting to £35 had been received. Officers Re-elected Members agreed with the view expressed by the president, and it was decided to re-elect last year’s officers until some decision could be made about the holding of the festival. New officers could be added later thought fit. The officers elected last year were:—Patron, Mr C. H. Cooper; president, Mr Edgar James; vicepresidents, Miss A. T. S. Hanlin, Mr A. F. B.
