BOBBY CALF POOLS

PIAKO FEDERATION PAYMENTS TO PRODUCERS PRICES SHOW IMPROVEMENT For the season ended December 2, the Piako Federated Calf Pools handled 60,522 calves and the Waihi District Calf Pool, which is affiliated with the Federation, 4977 calves, a total of 65,499, stated the chairman. Mr E. Palliser, of Springdale, to-day. Last season’s collections amounted to 61,575. The federation affiliated with the Waikato Federated Calf Pools for selling purposes, comprising Piako, Hamilton, Tauranga, Otorohanga, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Putaruru Pools, this organisation disposing of more than 186,000 calves during the season. Early in September an advance of 1.2 d a lb live weignt was made on ail calves collected by the Piako poo s to August 26, and Id per lb to suppliers ol the Waihi pool. This represented a payment of £12,126 4s 2d. A further sum of £14,467 Is 5d has now* been distributed, making a totai payment to producers for the season of £26,593 5s 7ci. This payment includes a bonus on calves supplied to August 26 and full payment on calves supplied thereafter, tne same rate of payment being made for early and late calves. Prices received during the year showed an improvement on those obtained for the previous season. Distribution Summary The following summary shows the amount distributed by each pool, the return per lb. live weight and the number of calves handled.

This represents an average payment of 8/2.12d at the farm gate for a 62.82 lb. calf for the Piako County pools, and of 7/4.81d for a 64.08 lb. calf for the Waihi pool, extra freight and cartage accounting for this difference. individual pool returns in the Piako range from 8/3.38 (Kiwi-tahi-Kereone) to 8/0.25d (Tahuna), per average calf. The 1938 average for Piako ,was 7/7.41 for a 63.34 lb. calf, and for Waihi 6/8.10 for a 64.70 lb. calf. No Distinction Made Calves were collected in all pools down to 50 lb., with the exception of Waihi, which altered the minimum weight to 521 b. during the season, and the Tahuna pool, which conveyed direct to the works by road, enabling calves to be collected at 49 lb. For a short period calves were collected

by this pool at 48 lb., but this had the effect of increasing the condemned percentage and therefore was discontinued. other pools in the federation also experimented in tne collection of calves under 50 lb, but did not continue the practice. However, producers received the same rate ol payment per lb. live weight for these light calves, as for calves 50 lb. and over, no distinction having been made. The carriers again rendered excellent service, and in its second year of operation the federation experienced another very successful season.

CO-OPERATIVE COMPANY RETURNS SHOW INCREASE The New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association announces that for the season just closed 41 pools were administrated co-operatively by the company. On behalf of these pools a final cash distribution of over £23,000 has been completed. The company's total collections to date amount to more than 250,000 calves, of which figure just under 195,000 were handled on behalf of pools, which represents an increase on last year’s operations of more than 67,000. The average live weight of calves collected from pools was approximately 61 lb, this being considerably lower than that experienced last year. Realisations, however, have shown a substantial increase on those procured last season, the net average total payments at gate for the season in pools in the Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty districts being as follows: The payments vary according to weight of calf handled and the rate of cartage and cost of railage to port works.
