GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS
The improving Racecamp and Sunny Downs will represent the stable of Mrs M. Williams at the Taranaki meeting. On their encouraging form at the Waipa meeting they should pay expenses on the trip. Not Making Trip Miss Bridge, who was entered lor the Taranaki meeting, failed to survive the acceptances for the first day. E. J. Murtagh Leaves E. J. Murtagh left today for New Plymouth with Corato, Prince Rangi, Clessamor, Sieglinde, Centaurus and Misora. M. J. Carroll’s Trio M. J. Caroll’s trio, Tosh, Bronze Step and Herbage are to fulfil engagements on the first day of the approaching Taranaki Christmas meeting. Looks Well Val Pere, who thrives on racing, is bearing a particularly healthy appearance and indicated the other morning at Hawera by clocking 1.2 4-5 for five furlongs that he should win races over the holiday period. Fiancee Working Well Fiancee has been working well on the tracks at Hawera and the other morning impressed by running live furlongs in 1.2 4-5. She is entered for the open sprint on the first day at Taranaki and should give a good account of herself. The Cardinal It is questionable whether The Cardinal has ever looked better than he does just now and in view of his form in the Te Awamutu Cup last | week when he was finishing on j solidly from near the rear of the j field he will firm in his position as a likely Auckland Cup fancy. *
Auckland Cup Riders Probable riders for the Auckland j Cup include: R. W. McTavish, Llan- j gollen; A. C. Messervy, Scotland; W. Thomson, Beverley; H. N. Wiggins, Pern; W. J. Broughton, Catalogue; C. T. Wilson, Dictate; W. J. Mudford, ■ Bonstar; G. Cameron. Golden Sheila; i L. J. Ellis, Flood Tide; C. G. Gouls- j bro, Balinavar; O. Evans, The Card- , inal. Riding at Awapuni The Te Awamutu horsemen, C. G. j Goulsbro and R. E. Horne will be j riding at Awapuni on Saturday, the j former being engaged to ride six of | T. R. George’s representatives, while j Horne will be on Classform, Tide- j waiter and Don Quex.
Great Swoop The winning form of Great Swoop in the South draws attention to the j prospects of the Magnus three-year- ! old in the Queen's Plate at Ellerslie. ! His last appearance was at the Riccarton carnival last month, when he was finishing on behind the placed division in the Stonyhurst Handicap (1 mile). Condition of Llangollen The withdrawal of Llangollen from the Te Awamutu Cup last week is said to have been due to slight soreness but it is anticipated she will be fit to take her place in the Auckland Cup next week. The longest distance Llangollen has won over is eleven furlongs, the occasion being when ! she won the Herries Memorial Cup i at Te Aroha, and on that occasion j she won so stylishly that there is no I reason to doubt her ability to go Tuesday’s Cup journey.
Consistent Type Few horses have been racing more consistently this season than Race Call and in eleven starts since September he has failed only on one oc- ! casion to finish in the money. Raoe Call is engaged in the Flying Handicap at New Plymouth next week and will not lack a strong following on the machines. Proud Fox Eligible Although he has now won three races of the collective value of over £SOO Proud Fox is still eligible to contest the Queen’s Plate on the first day at Ellerslie as the conditions of the race state that horses are eligible that “have not won a fiat race of the | value of £250 or the collective value jof £SOO at time of nomination.” Big Three-year-old ! The big gelding Omapo shaped at- | tractively in the gallops at Ellerslie i yesterday, his effort over five furI longs being the best of the morning I over the distance. The three-year-old full brother to Haeropo, who raced successfully at Ellerslie two years ago, has been unplaced at his last two starts but he comes from the south, nevertheless, with a good reputation. Likely Stakes Candidate Her brilliant victory in the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, will claim the two-year-old Doria a firm following in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at the approaching Auckland Summer carnival. A rangy type of filly by llliad, she has arrived at Ellerslie in good order and promises to lack little on the score of condition for racing at the meeting. Prospects of Tosh Tosh is to contest sprint events at the Taranaki Christmas meeting and on the way he shaped over five furlongs yesterday at headquarters he will have to be conceded prospects. After running the first two furlongs in 24gS Tosh was sticking on resolutely over the concluding stages to j record the excellent time of 1.1 4-5 I for the full distance. He is apparently showing the benefit of recent racing. Flood Tide Flood Tide is handily placed in the Auckland Cup next week and though he failed to make any impression in his Cup engagement at the Waipa meeting last week he should not be too readily discarded on that account. The turning nature of the track was probably against him and the fact that he is looking better now than for some time past lends weight to the contention that he will be seen to better advantage at Ellerslie.
