MORRINSVILLE SPORTS
VARIED PROGRAMME ARRANGED CYCLING AND MIDGET CARS One of the features of the gala sports meeting to be held by the Morrinsville Athletic and Cycle Club on the Morrinsville Speedway on January 2 will be the special cycle match racing between George Giles (Christchurcn) and R. Moreland (Westland). Giles is the New Zealand champion over half-a-mile, while Moreland holds the corresponding title for a mile, and the two men snould be well matched in the quarter-mile sprints. A full programme of cycling events has been arranged by the club, in addition to a number of athletic races, midget car contests and wrestling bouts. This year the midget car races will be held on a grass track and will include match, novelty and scratch races. Frank Brewer, the well-known American driver, will arrive in New Zealand prior to the meeting, and will race against Ken Wylie (Australia) and G. Mathieson (Auckland), the New Zealand champion, in special match races. An hour’s wrestling will also be included on the programme, the chief contest being that between W. Kenneth (Auckland), 14st 31b, and J. Irvine (Auckland), 13st 111 b. Mr ,T. McLean (Auckland) will be the referee.
Another feature of the comprehensive programme will be the clay-bird shooting. The competitors will include some of the leading shootists in the Dominion. Single and doublerise events will be held, and among the marksmen taking part will be M. Pratt (Otorohanga). W. Sharpe (Morrinsville), A. Aitken (Morrinsville) and J. McMullan (Morrinsville).
