WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SPRINGDALE The monthly meeting of the Springdale Women’s Institute was held in the local hall recently, when an excellent attendance of members was presided over by the president, Mrs E. Palliser. Mrs A. reported on a recent meeting of the Red Cross Society in Te Aroha. It was decided to hold a gala day to raise funds for Red Cross work, various committees in the district having offered to cooperate with the Women’s Institute. At the conclusion of the business, ihe members took charge and entertained the committee, Mrs T. Burgess taking the chair. Mrs S. Wells, related some of her amusing experiences abroad. A competition for the best floral spray was won by Mrs W. Ryan, Miss A. Rae being second and Mrs R. Malcolm third. Mrs Ryan was also the winner of the competition for the best collection of vegetables. The sales table did good business, the proceeds being forwarded to the Waikato East Federation. RENOWN The monthly meeting of the Renown Women’s Institute was held on December 14, Mrs Tapp presiding over a good attendance. The points competition for a collection of sweets was won by Mrs A. J. T. Tapp, the sweets being sent to the Sunshine Ward of the Waikato Hospital. An interesting demonstration of making fancy cushions was given by Mrs J. Tapp and Mrs Preest. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Green, Geddes and Gaskell. EUREKA The monthly meeting of the Eureka Women’s Institute was held in the hall recently, Mrs Harington presiding over a«iair attendance of members. A detailed account of the group

delegates’ recent meeting in Motumaoho was given by Mesdames P. Clarkin and Johns. An interesting competition was won by Mrs P. Clarkin. The roll-call, “A Christmas sweet,” was well responded to, many good recipes being handed in. The competitions for the day were won as follows:—Flowers, Mrs L. Masters 1, Mesdames Larsen and Saward, equal, 2; Christmas gift, not to cost more than 2s, Mrs Larsen 1, Mrs L. Masters 2. The winner, of the hall competition was Mrs W. Gee. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames P.. Clarkin and A. Hinton.
