CHRISTMAS TRADE

MARKET AT FRANKTON FIRMER BEEF VALUES VARIABLE SHEEP SALE Buy. s anxious to obtain supplies for the Christmas trade maintained keen competition at the Frankton sale yesterday, when full entries were forward in practically all departments, although total entries were not as numerous as last week. Values in all sections were usually firm to higher.

A good entry of steers sold well at fully firm rates with occasional price changes in favour of vendors. Prime heavy cattle sold from £l2 to £l2 15s against £l2 to £l3 5s last week, but the top-priced entries forward yesterday were lighter than those of the previous sale. The bulk of the entries auctioned made from £9 7s 6d to £ll 10s a head. Although penned in heavy numbers, cows and heifers sold on a buoyant market, values usually being at least 10s a head better. Heavy prime sorts were readily traded from £9 2s to £lO, with a good proportion of the prime quality pens changing hands from £7 to £8 12s. Any good fat descriptions generally made from £5 15s to £6 15s. Market For Sheep A rather variable sale was experienced for fat sheep for although at times competition was inclined to be quiet with slightly reduced values, there were times during the sale that bidding was brisk and values were very firm. Quite a number of wether consignments bro Light from 24s to 25s 3d, while average fat descriptions made from 22s to 23s 9d. Quotations for top-quality sheep were much the same as last week, the variation in values occurring mainly in the auctions of the more inferior sorts. Fewer ewes were on offer and the limit for these was usually 16s. Fat pigs again sold readily, values remaining firm for porkers and baconers, although a slight easing in light porker values was noticeable after lunelp A lighter entry of store pigs sold very firmly.
