SCHOOL GALA NIGHT

BREAK-UP AT TAUHEI PRIZES PRESENTED (Special to Times.) TAUHEI, Monday. Last Friday night was a gala night Tor Tauhei children, the occasion being the break-up of the Tauhei School and a Christmas Tree function. The tree was hung with gifts for every child in Tauhei. The teachers or the school, Mrs Morgan and Miss Shephard, and the school committee. in conjunction with the local branch nr the Women's Division,, shared the management or the evening, and they were heartily congratulated on its success. The hall was crowded, and most or ihe children were in fancy dress, which added to the gaiety or the scene. Mr W. Tavener acted as chairman and Mr V. c. Jack was Master or Ceremonies. Mr Lewar took the part of Father ChristBesides a programme by the school children. the school prize-giving and the distribution of the Christmas toys, dances were provided Tor the adults, Mrs Bruce Findlay being at the piano. The school prizewinners were as rollows: -Best behaved girj. aged 10. Frances Ireland: best behaved boy. aged 10, Donald Ireland (prizes presented by the school committee ; best writing in school ami neatness of all work, Phyllis Mosclem (prize, a gold signet ring): best writing. Standards :i and i, Dawn Greentree: best writing. Standards 1 ami 2. Rangi lleke; excellent progress, Barry Holland: very good progress. Annie McDougal, Noeiine Scott, rui Harris; two consolation prizes were awarded to George Scutt for behaviour and Bill Brunt Tor writing ipriz.es donated bv Mrs Morgan, headmistress;. Mr Tavener presented the prizes. Prizes for best fancy dresses were won bv valda Goodman (safety First), Beryl Williams (Madame Pompadour). Val Jack ■Bed Indian . and B. Crow (Pirate). The concert programme was as follows:

Recitation, Nell Cadman; song, “ Drummer Boy,” Ruth Crow; recitation, “ Swinging,” Joy Worthington; ‘‘At Our School,” Barry Holland; ‘‘Baby Clare,” Fay Cadman; ‘‘Aunt Tabltha,” Hazel Brightwell; piano solo, Aleza Gee; play, “ Merry and Bright,” C. Williams, N\ Scott, A. Gee and T. Frost. Farewell to Soldier During the evening opportunity was taken to rarewell Private ClifT Morgan, a member of the First Echelon for overseas service. Mi- J. Noble explained that there was insufficient time to arrange a special function, but the district could not see Private Morgan go away without the congratulations or his fellow-settlers. Mr .Noble also congratulated Mrs Morgan on having four boys in camp. Cheers were given lor Mrs Morgan and her sons.
