GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS

Waikato stables are freely represented in the fields for the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting. Rider for Foxsen Foxsen is to have the services of L. J. Ellis in her Queerr’s Plate engagement on the first day of the Ellerslie carnival. Du Maurier Du Maurier, who has performed well over the obstacles this season, has been doing everything required of him in recent weeks and is in good trim for holiday engagements. Condition of Disdain According to reports from Awapuni Disdain is in splendid fettle just now and hopes are entertained in that centre of her repeating her Railway Handicap success of last year. Clarion Call Clarion Call has been schooling brilliantly at Awapuni and he promises to strip in great heart for racing at the Ellerslie Summer carnival, where on the first day he is to contest the Grafton Hurdles. Brazen Bold Brazen Bold gave a solid performance in the Flying Handicap at Te Awamutu and though he stood little chance with Our Jean at the finish it was only in the very deciding stages that the latter had his measure. Brazen Bold appears to be definitely on the upgrade and a win for the three-year-old son of Brazen should not be long delayed. Brilliant Early Lady Bambury displayed early brilliance in her engagement in the first division of the Waipa Plate at Te Awamutu and though Biddy Girl and Merry Vaals had her measure at the end she was coming again and gave every indication of early retribution. She will bear watching on the latter days at Ellerslie. At New Plymouth Mai de mer, who showed ?p for the greater part of the hurdle event at Te Awamutu, is entered for the Taranaki meeting and as he is likely to be benefited from racing last week he may be seen to better advantage over the holiday period. Checked at Start Nyola was checked at the start of the second division of the Waipa Plate at, Te Awamutu and to finish right up fourth as she did was a meritorious performance and one on which she should improve. She was well back at the straight entrance and had to make up considerable leeway to get to within striking distance of the placed division.

On the Upgrade Sunny Downs indicated by his running at Te Rapa and again at Te Awamutu on Saturday that he is on the upgrade again and he will need to be taken into account in engagements over the holidays. He is to race on the Taranaki circuit, where his stablemate, Racecamp, will also be seen with the colours up.

Was Finishing On Chikara was finishing on in characteristic style over the concluding stages of the W.G. Park Hurdles at the Waipa meeting on Saturday and his turn should come soon, last week’s exhibition being a repetition of his encouraging showing at Te Rapa when he was coming at the right end to beat all but Ureklaw and Ringshot in the Waimai Hack Hurdles.

Will Be Improved Devon should be all the better for his race in the W. G. Park Hurdles at the recent Waipa meeting and may be seen to better advantage the next time he is produced. He did not meet with the best of luck perhaps in Saturday’s engagement and appeals as an improving prospect for hurdle racing over the holidays.

Australian Star Australian Star was responsible for an encouraging performance in the hack seven at Te Awamutu, hitting the front early and carrying on in the lead to the home turn only to tire in the straight and finish close up behind the placed division. Australian Star, who is bearing a healthy appearance, should be benefited by Saturday’s run and a winning bracket may come his way soon. Welcome Change of Luck The achievement of Trig Station provided the young Te Rapa trainer. R. Cotter, with a welcome change of luck when he finished solidly to wear down Glen Connell in the straight and beat him by over a length. Prior to Saturday, Trig Station had raced disappointingly but now that he has struck form more may be heard of him. He was produced in splendid fettle by Cotter. Disappointed One of the disappointments of the recent Waipa meeting was the performance of the favourite Glen Connell in the second division of the Waipa Plate. Jumping out smartly from an inside position he soon established a lead on the field, an advantage which he increased to five or six lengths approaching the home bend. Levelling up for home he appeared to have the opposition definitely settled but he compounded quickly in the straight and was decisively beaten by the improving Trig Station.

Fils De Vaals Fils de Vaals unwound a fine finishing run over the concluding stages of the Paterangi Handicap at Te Awamutu, coming from the rear to being right up behind the placed division. Fils de Vaals is an acceptor for the Auckland Cup in which he is to have the services of the Te Rapa lightweight, H. Long, who it will be remembered was successful on

Cheval de Voice last year. Cheval de Voice, who like Fils dc Vaals races in the colours of the Te Awamutu sportsman, Mr A. Rowan, is again engaged this year, but it was Long's wish that he have the mount on the three-year-old in preference to Cheval de Volee.

DUNEDIN CLUB

Our Jean Impressive The impressive performance of Our Jean among the sprinters at Te Awamutu was such to draw pointed attention to her Railway Handicap prospects at Ellerslie, for to be checked early and to come from a seemingly impossible position in the field as she did on Saturday stamped her as a sprinter of exceptional merit. It is against Our that she is rather wayward at the barrier but if she goes away on terms with her field this day week her prospects must be highly assessed. Racecamp Unlucky Racecamp, who it will be recalled paid over a century on the win machine at the Waikato Winter meeting last year, nearly brought off another surprise at the Waipa meeting last week, when he was called upen to lower his colours by the narrow margin of a nose to the favourite Proud Fox. Beginning smartly Racecamp hit the front early in proceedings and after setting the pace came into the straight with an advantage of a couple of lengths over the favourite and in the very deciding stages the pair staged an exciting finish, Proud Fox, kept up to his work, getting his nose in front practically in the last stride. Racecamp is entered for engagements on the Taranaki circuit and should pay expenses on the trip. Hopalong: Improved Hopalong gave a dashing display of jumping when he improved on recent displays to win the W.G. Park Hurdles at Te Awamutu at odds on the win machine that approached double figures. Moving into a handy position as the field raced past the stands he went to the front six furlongs from home and though headed by the favourite Devon approaching the turn he jumped to the front again at the last fence to win decisively. Now that he has struck form Hopalong may soon extend his account and handily placed as he is in the Grafton Hurdles at Ellerslie on Boxing Day he will be assured of an optimistic following. Winning form over hurdles is invariably reliable form and the Rosendale gelding appeals as being one of the hardest to dispose of.
