TORRENTIAL RAIN
FLOODING IN HOMES GISBORNE HIGHWAY BLOCKED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) GISBORNE, Monday A torrential downpour, 4.54 inches of rain falling in seven hours, is reported from Puha, 20 miles north of Gisborne, and parts of the Te Karaka district on Saturday night. The water rose over the decks of low-level bridges, causing blockage of traffic on the Gisborne-Opotiki main highway. The full force of the storm was apparently centred about Puha. Creeks were higher than for many years. A car, driven by Miss Josephine Scott, of Puha, was affected by water when crossing one of the low-level bridges and she and her passengers had to abandon it temporarily. Afraid for the safety of his home on the bank of one of the affected streams Mr C. H. Norris vacated the house. While going out to see if she could assist to shift stock, Mrs Norris tripped into a stream while moving about in the dark. She fell near some wire netting and was able to pull herself back to safety. Just as the flood waters were lapping the doorstep of the house the level began to drop.
Mr Richard Graham lost many of his fences and his firewood. Water was a foot deep throughout his home.
